Yup, you guys have earned it. Like Pedro in 2004, there’s nothing these 2019 Red Sox can do but “tip our cap and call the Yankees our Daddies”. The New York Yankees have stolen the AL East pennant from the three-time defenders of that title.
But you know what that title buys, a ticket to the big show. Before 2007, Division pennants were huge to come by for the humble little ballplayers of Fenway Park. They still sort of are, even with winning 4 championships this century. But, can you imagine George Steinbrenner joining the champagne celebration Mike Stanton and Aaron Judge partook in last night? I was young when ole George was still kickin it, but I know the stories and I’ve seen the press conferences. The dude ruled with an iron fist and didn’t settle. I respect that.
Now, if he saw this?
We broke them. We broke Yankee fans. Somewhere in the Twighlight zone, these guys are stuck between yelling “27 rings” and asking “when did we become Mets?”. That’s right, this decade the Mets have been a better postseason team than the Yankees, let that sink in. The team they chanted “1918” at in the 20th century has been emasculated by the said team this century.
The Yankees may have the most championships in all of American professional sports. But, for the past 60 years, Yankee fans can only brag about seeing 9 of those. Any Yankee fan who became of legal drinking age this year couldn’t even get drunk if they downed an equal number of beers to rings they’ve been alive for (4).
My point? Yankee fans need to start worrying about the front half of this century instead of the 17 championships won at the front half of the 20th century. Congrats, and I hope you can keep up with us here in present.
