Coop’s TV Time

I’m not here to tell you that Parks and Rec is a superior show for intellectuals who understand the nuances and comedic riffs of government being satirized in a micro-setting of local government… but I will tell you you are a big ole dum dum head if you prefer the Office to Parks.

I don’t blog much outside the realm of sports nevermind just the Red Sox, so this is a bit of a nice changeup for me and will hopefully get my mind off the fact that Chaim Bloom has yet to talk with Brock Holt (just outright criminal). The only thing that rivals my love for watching baseball – and can honestly surpass baseball at times – is watching Parks and Recreation. The show is timeless in part because the people within government and the stuff they do never change, so the jabs and tongue in cheek jokes the show crack will forever be funny. Same deal with VEEP, matter of fact prioritize watching both. Matter of fact watch both at the same time.

BUT, I’m not here to tell you to watch the damn show, I’m here to tell you why it’s so great. I’d put my watch count for Parks and Rec at right around 9 times end to end not counting sporadically randomly turning on a favorite episode on a Saturday morning. Never have I caught this little Easter Egg in my nine runs through this glorious sitcom.

On Season 4 Episode 19, “Live Ammo”, Leslie tries to negotiate with Councilman Pillner played by Bradley Whitford. You may know Brad as the racist dad from “Get Out”. Or if you’re a bit older/enjoy great tv writing you know him as Josh Lyman from the “West Wing”. Terrific show end to end and if you haven’t watched it yet, watch it while you are also simultaneously watching Parks and Rec, and VEEP.

In this episode, there is a scene that takes place in the Councilman’s office where he’s talking with our main heroine Leslie Knope. The scene opens with the camera focused on an object on his desk, this is the Easter Egg. It’s a framed napkin that reads “Pillner for Pawnee”…pillner

This is a reference to where Whitford really made a name for himself back on the West Wing. President Bartlet had the same thing on the Resolute Desk in the show because it came from a moment that started his run for the office. Really good story. Don’t want to bore you with the entire thing, because that will ruin it for when you watch it like you promised me you would.

Anyways that’s it, that’s all I wanted to share. Maybe I’ll do more of this “Coop’s tv time” blogging if this does well, but mainly because I don’t want to think about the reconstruction of the 2020 Red Sox.
