You are given a full year to train, practice, and try as many times as you want.
By June 30th, 2022 you have to do one or the other:
Hit Pesky’s Pole (on the fly and BP speed)
-OR-
Make a hole in one on the 3rd hole at Ridder Farm Golf Course (Here’s a video for anyone unfamiliar with the Ridshow)
Which is easier to do and why is it making a hole in one (once again, after a year of training)?
Now, I know one of you rapsacllions out there is gonna read this and be “oH mUrPh ThAt’S sO sTuPiD iT’s So EaSy” but fuck you. I think it’s close to being comparable. Here’s why:
First, let’s just look at difficulty factor through the lense of professionals. We here, and I’m sure most of you, watch a lot or a decent amount of baseball-especially Red Sox baseball. Personally, I think I RARELY see a ball boink off any foul pole. Not to brag, but I also happen to watch a lot of golf and most tournaments come and go without any of the 120+ professional golfers making an ace despite having a minimum of 8 chances a week (4 par 3s on most courses and you’re “guaranteed” 2 rounds).
Accuracy is vital for both.
More reasons why it’s fair and comparable:
Wind affects both balls. Though the hole is a little longer (around 155 yds or 465 feet whereas Pesky’s Pole is 302 or 310 or whatever feet), I would contend it’s far easier to hit a golf ball over 400 feet than it is to hit a baseball over 300 feet. If you think that’s not true then maybe the stipulation of BP speed, as opposed to deGrom’s 101 mph, makes it more difficult. The foul pole does not move and, as long as the ball is spinning correctly and in line with the pole, you simply need to dial in distance. Same for the hole at Ridder. The pin/hole aren’t going to move and the green is basically level and break is a myth.
Yes, with Pesky’s pole being in right field, it may seem to give lefties an advantage. But, whether you’re lefty or righty, you still need to pull or go oppo at an insanely accurate degree. Whether you’re righty or lefty in golf, you need to be insanely accurate in hitting a ball straight to get the hole in one.
In baseball, you’re not going to barrel it every time and you’ll mess up and pull one too much or ground out or pop it up or miss. Same for golf. You might catch it fat or thin or s-word it or slice or hook or any number of things. But, you do get a year to train.
I have gone out before and spent hours trying to make a hole in one on a single hole. I don’t know if I want to say which course but it was in Rockland. It’s wicked hard and that hole was 50 yards shorter than the one at Ridder. I did not make a “hole in one” that day. But, in doing this, you’d train for a year and figure out which club you hit around 150-160 and then just grind with that on accuracy.
Personally, as a former PO (I mean, I would’ve raked if I was given any ABs js) and current “golfer”, I’m going to have to say Pesky’s Pole is much more difficult.
If this debate doesn’t work for you and your friends, you could always try talking/arguing about religion.
